Alan Olson and myself, Steve Doyle, as co-captains, thought we should start keeping people abreast of the tasks that the SDS club has undertaken and what plans we have for the future. It will also be a place to visit for any events upcoming. If there are any events you wish to promote, please let us know so they can be placed in the SDS newsletter.
So this is our first SDS newsletter as the club keeps expanding not only with new undertakings, but also new memberships. The goal is to encourage and promote a healthy environment by involving all members athletically via all sports, not just running, track and field as well as other sports like cycling, swimming, etc. Anyone who has an interest in other sports please let us know so we can make members aware and do what
we can to promote your sport.
The major task at this point in time is the hosting of the second annual Dirt Dog event on 15 October in Ramona at the Wellfield Park to celebrate the life of Jim Kurtz. This “Celebration of Life for Jim Kurtz” is an 8K cross country run for all ages. It is now known as the JK8K.
We continually attempt to form teams for USATF National and local events.
The big event for April was the Carlsbad 5000. Check out the results. Some will be running the Avenue of the Giants marathon and half marathon on 7 May.
There are organized workouts at Balboa Park and Lake Miramar. The Park runs are every Wednesday morning at 7:30. Once a month there is a Jim Metts 5K time trial at the Park. Saturday mornings starting at 6:30 there are various workouts available as well at the lake.
